Rain Bird vs Hunter vs Orbit

The three dominant residential sprinkler brands each target different segments. Rain Bird and Hunter compete at the professional level while Orbit owns the big-box retail space. Here is how they compare for Idaho installations.

Brand Overview

Rain Bird

Founded in 1933, Rain Bird is the oldest and most established irrigation brand. They invented the impact sprinkler and have been the professional-grade standard for decades. Rain Bird products are used by most commercial landscape companies and by the majority of professional irrigation contractors in Idaho.

  • Market position: Professional grade, premium pricing
  • Distribution: Irrigation supply houses, some big-box stores
  • Strengths: Head quality, nozzle technology, commercial-grade valves
  • Smart controller: ESP-TM2 with WiFi module, LNK2 WiFi
  • Warranty: 5-year on controllers, varies by product

Hunter Industries

Hunter is Rain Bird's main professional-grade competitor. They are known for innovative products like the MP Rotator (rotary nozzle) and the Hydrawise smart controller platform. Many irrigation professionals prefer Hunter for residential work due to slightly easier installation features and excellent tech support.

  • Market position: Professional grade, competitive with Rain Bird
  • Distribution: Irrigation supply houses, growing retail presence
  • Strengths: MP Rotator nozzles, Hydrawise controller platform, PGP rotor (industry standard)
  • Smart controller: Hydrawise HC series — excellent app and weather integration
  • Warranty: 5-year on most products

Orbit / B-hyve

Orbit is the dominant brand at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Walmart. Their B-hyve smart controller line has gained significant market share due to aggressive retail pricing and good app design. Orbit products are aimed at the DIY homeowner and are generally more affordable than Rain Bird or Hunter.

  • Market position: Consumer/retail grade, value pricing
  • Distribution: Big-box stores, online — easy to find in Idaho Falls and Pocatello
  • Strengths: Low price, good smart controller (B-hyve), wide retail availability
  • Smart controller: B-hyve series — surprisingly capable app with weather-based scheduling
  • Warranty: 2-3 years on most products

Controller Comparison

The controller is the brain of your system, and it is the component where brand differences matter most. All three brands offer smart WiFi controllers. Here is how they stack up:

Note on Rachio: Rachio is not one of the "big three" manufacturers but has become a popular standalone smart controller brand. The Rachio 3 ($200-$280) is controller-only (no heads or valves) and works with any brand's heads and valves. Many Idaho homeowners pair Rachio controllers with Rain Bird or Hunter heads. It has arguably the best app and weather integration of any controller.

Sprinkler Head Comparison

For sprinkler heads, the quality gap between professional and consumer brands is most noticeable. Heads are exposed to UV, weather, mower strikes, and constant pressure cycling — cheap materials show their weakness over time.

  • Rain Bird 1800 series (spray bodies): The industry standard. Reliable retraction, good seal, 5-year lifespan minimum. Paired with Rain Bird HE-VAN nozzles for matched precipitation.
  • Hunter Pro-Spray (spray bodies): Comparable to Rain Bird 1800. Excellent build quality. Paired with Hunter MP Rotator nozzles — a rotating stream nozzle that is arguably the best spray nozzle available for windy Idaho conditions.
  • Hunter PGP Ultra (rotor): The most popular residential rotor worldwide. Smooth rotation, excellent arc control, durable. The benchmark for rotor quality.
  • Rain Bird 5000 series (rotor): Strong competitor to the PGP. Rain curtain nozzle technology for uniform coverage. Both brands are excellent choices.
  • Orbit heads: Functional but shorter lifespan. Plastic internals wear faster. The spring retraction mechanism tends to fail sooner, leaving heads stuck up (mower damage risk). Adequate for budget-conscious DIY installations but professional contractors typically avoid them.

Our Recommendation for Idaho Homeowners

Best overall: Hunter or Rain Bird

For a professionally installed system that will last 15-20 years in Idaho's harsh climate, either Rain Bird or Hunter is an excellent choice. The quality difference between them is negligible — both make outstanding products. Most Idaho contractors have a preference based on their experience and local supply house availability. Trust your contractor's preference between these two brands.

Best for wind: Hunter MP Rotator nozzles

If your property is exposed to Idaho's wind (common in Rexburg, Rigby, and open Twin Falls lots), Hunter MP Rotators are the best nozzle choice. Their rotating streams resist wind far better than traditional spray patterns.

Best budget smart controller: Orbit B-hyve or Rachio

For a DIY controller upgrade on a budget, the Orbit B-hyve ($100-$160) offers good smart features at the lowest price. If you can spend more, the Rachio 3 ($200-$280) has the best app and weather integration.
